Category A1

Driving licence theory tests, category A1

Category A1 is the first motorcycle step - from 16, capped at 125 cm³ and 11 kW. Sit the full paper of 32 questions, free and without an account.

What category A1 covers

Category A1 entitles you to ride a motorcycle with an engine capacity up to 125 cm³, power up to 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg, a three-wheeled motorcycle up to 15 kW, and to drive category AM vehicles.

For a two-wheeled motorcycle all three conditions must be met at once. An engine capacity up to 125 cm³ is not enough on its own if the power exceeds 11 kW.

A1, A2 and A - three motorcycle steps

The motorcycle categories are arranged by the power of the vehicle and the age of the rider: A1 from 16, A2 from 18, A from 24 - or from 20 with category A2 held for at least two years.

A1 is therefore the way onto that ladder two years before A2 and eight years before category A in its basic route.

What the exam material covers in category A1

The paper is built as in the other categories: 20 basic questions and 12 specialist ones, 25 minutes in total.

The specialist part covers category A1 and is separate from the pools for A2 and A, even though all three concern motorcycles.
