Category D

Driving licence theory tests, category D

Category D is a bus with no limits and the most branched age threshold in the whole act - from 24 as the general rule down to 18 for professional transport. Sit the full paper of 32 questions, free and without an account.

What category D covers

Category D entitles you to drive a bus, a combination of a bus with a light trailer, and category AM vehicles. There is no limit here on the number of seats or on the length of the vehicle.

Below it sits category D1, limited to a bus designed to carry no more than 17 people including the driver and no longer than 8 metres. A heavier combination with a trailer requires category D+E.

Category D from what age - four thresholds

The rule is 24. The three lower thresholds apply only to people who have obtained the initial driver qualification provided for professional drivers, and they depend on what is carried and where.

It is the most branched age threshold in the whole act and the only one where age is decided by the kind of transport performed rather than by the vehicle itself.

What the exam material covers in category D

The paper is built as in the other categories: 20 basic questions and 12 specialist ones, 25 minutes in total.

The specialist part covers category D, so it deals with material specific to carrying passengers by bus. Categories D1 and D have separate pools of specialist questions.
