How much a category B driving licence costs in Poland and why there is no single exam fee

What the cost of a category B driving licence in Poland is made of, who sets each item and why the state exam fee differs from one province to another.

There is no single answer to “how much does a category B driving licence cost in Poland”, and that is not an evasion. The cost is made of several separate items, and only some of them have a price set from above: the fee for issuing the document is the same across the country, the price of a driving course is set by the market, and the fee for the state exam differs from province to province. Since 1 January 2023 it is the provincial assembly, not a minister, that sets that fee - which is why every “nationwide exam price” you find today is either a figure from before that change or one region's rate presented as a national one.

What the cost of a category B licence is made of

There are five items: the medical examination, the course at a driving school, the fee for the theory part of the state exam, the fee for the practical part, and the fee for issuing the document. Only the last of these has one amount that applies across Poland. The rest depend on where you train and where you take the exam.

ItemWho sets the priceIs the amount the same across the country
Medical examinationoutside the exam fee systemwe give no figure - confirm it with a doctor authorised to examine drivers
Course at a driving schoolthe driving school; a market price, not regulatedno: it differs between cities and between schools
Fee for the theory part of the examthe provincial assembly, within the statutory ceilingno: it differs between provinces
Fee for the practical part of the examthe provincial assembly, within the statutory ceilingno: it differs between provinces
Fee for issuing the driving licencea regulation of the Minister of Infrastructureyes: 100 zł, as at 11 September 2026

Figures appear in this article only where they can be traced to a specific provision or a specific resolution. We do not give the cost of the medical examination, because we have no confirmed source for it - instead of guessing, ask about the rate before your appointment. Where the table has no number, it tells you what the price depends on instead.

Why there is no single exam price

Because since 1 January 2023 no national regulation sets one. The fee for conducting the state exam is set by the provincial assembly by way of a resolution that is an act of local law - this is what Article 56a of the Polish Act on Persons Driving Vehicles says. The previous system, in which one regulation gave a rate for the whole country, ended when that provision came into force.

The consequence is straightforward: there are as many price lists as there are provinces, and each assembly passes its resolution on its own schedule and with its own content. Two people taking the same exam for the same category in two neighbouring provinces may pay different amounts, and both pay lawfully.

That is why a figure from an article published a few years ago, or from a forum thread, tells you nothing about what you will pay. It only tells you what the exam cost in some province at some point in time.

What the statutory ceilings on exam fees are

The Act does not give the price of the exam, only its upper limit. Under Article 56a, the fee for conducting the theory part for any category may not exceed 50 zł, and the fee for the practical part may not exceed 200 zł or 250 zł, depending on the category.

Part of the examCategoriesCeiling written into the Act
theoryevery category50 zł
practicalAM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, C1, D1, T200 zł
practicalB+E, C1+E, C, C+E, D, D+E, D1+E250 zł

These numbers are not frozen. Article 56b requires the maximum rates to be changed every year in line with the annual average consumer price index published by the President of Statistics Poland. The indexation applies to the ceiling itself, not to the final price - an assembly may still set a lower rate.

This explains something that looks at first glance like a mistake: the rate in your province can be higher than the amount you read in the Act. The numbers in Article 56a are the wording of the provision, not the limit in force in the current year - after successive indexations that limit is higher.

How to check the rate in your province

The current amount is given by the fee list of the provincial road traffic centre where you take the exam. That is the only place where the rate is both current and binding - the centre applies the resolution of its own provincial assembly, so its price list and that resolution are the same amount.

Check two things while you are there: the date from which the price list applies, and whether a new resolution has come into force in the meantime. Resolutions usually take effect at the start of a calendar year, so a rate from before the change can circulate online long after it stopped applying.

An example shows the scale of the gap between the Act and practice. In Mazowieckie province, from 1 January 2026, the fee for the theory part is 56.98 zł and the fee for the practical part for category B is 229.99 zł; for the group covering B+E, C, C+E, D and D+E it is 288 zł. That is the rate of one province on one date, not a national price. In another province and in another year it will be different, so do not carry these numbers over to your own budget.

How much issuing the driving licence costs

100 zł - and this is the only item in the whole list that is the same regardless of where you live and where you took the exam. The amount is set by the regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 9 July 2025 on the fees for issuing documents confirming entitlements to drive vehicles (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 953); this is the position as at 11 September 2026.

You pay this fee once, for the issuing of the document itself, and it has nothing to do with the exam fees. Document fees are changed by regulation, just as exam rates are changed by resolution, so with every amount - this one included - check the date it is quoted for.

How much a course at a driving school costs

The price of a course is a market price and nobody regulates it. The driving school sets it itself, so it differs not only between cities but between two schools on the same street. For the same reason you will not find a range here: any number given would be either out of date or true for one city and misleading everywhere else.

The price depends above all on how many driving hours the course includes, in which city and in what car you train, and how quickly you want to finish. A course in a large city, in an intensive format and in a car of the same type as the exam vehicle, costs differently from the same course in a smaller town.

When comparing offers, always ask about the same things: how many hours of theory and driving are included in the quoted price, what an extra driving hour outside the package costs, whether study materials and the internal exam are included, whether the school trains in a car of the same type as the exam vehicle, and whether cancelling a lesson at the last moment carries a charge. The difference between two offers usually comes from these items, not from the price on the advertisement.

How much each further attempt at the exam costs

Every attempt is a separate fee of the same amount as the previous one. There is no discount for a retake, no two-attempt package and no refund for a failed exam - you pay for the exam being conducted, not for its result.

This is the item most often left out of a budget and at the same time the one that can change it most. The practical part costs several times more than the theory part, so retakes of the practical part weigh most heavily on the bill. If extra driving hours before the next attempt are added, the cost grows from two directions at once.

The practical conclusion is that the size of the bill is decided not only by the choice of centre but also by the number of attempts. The theory exam is the cheapest place here to make a mistake and the cheapest to make up for - passed on the first try, it leaves your bill for good.

Why you will not find a single total here

Because it cannot be calculated honestly. Four of the five items have no single amount applying across the country, so a total would be built from guessed numbers rather than verified ones - and such a total is worse than none at all, because it looks like a hard fact and tends to be remembered as one.

Work it out yourself from three things: the exam price list of the provincial road traffic centre where you will take the exam, the price of a specific course from a specific offer, and 100 zł for issuing the document. That is the only way to arrive at an amount that concerns you, rather than an averaged candidate from an article written a few years ago.
